- Microelectronics, telecommunications, and software engineering are three essential sectors of ICT in the Canary Islands with viable investment opportunities
- The dispersion of the Canary Islands, as well as its mountainous terrain, has proved to be a catalyst in the creation of a growing telecommunications sector
- Currently, the Canary Islands are directly connected to Europe by submarine optic fiber (over 2 Gbps). In addition, there are a large range of satellites covering Africa and South America with high visibility from the Canary Islands
The local microelectronic sector is maintained by talented engineers and scientists with a solid educational background and ample experience in technology transfer on both a national and international level. The access to a large variety of cutting-edge Si, GaAs, and SiGe technologies, as well as the development of verification environments and computer-aided design (CAD) tools, which - combined with excellent research facilities - have permitted the development of a number of successful innovative integrated systems for communications, multimedia, and wireless products.
The geography of the islands has been a catalyst to the development of a telecommunications sector. The dispersion of the islands has been essential to begin developing a telecommunications infrastructure to communicate. Based largely on the investment of international companies, the establishment of small local companies, and the priority status given to the telecommunications sector by the Government of the Canary Islands, this sector has been growing. Due to its strategic geographical position, the Canary Islands serve as a communication bridge (teleport) between Europe, the United States, and Africa.
Finally, the software industry forms a strategically important part of the local infrastructure. Software development in the Canary Islands mainly focuses on the development of products related to the audiovisual and media markets, where successful examples of Canarian companies established abroad demonstrates the acknowledgment of Canarian talent on an international playing field.
